Warriors Eskrima Workshop -15th September '07

On Saturday 15th September, Guro Krishna came over to Dublin for his second visit of the year.

The workshop was broken into the following sections:

  • Knife Grappling We began by running through some drills for typically ground control positions to mainly increase awareness of possible positions an attacker could draw a weapon from and what the best positions would be to take up in these scenarios.

  • Panantukan (Filipino boxing) A Jab, Cross, Hook & Uppercut to the head & body are the most common lines of attack in Boxing. With a lot of these attacks catching, covering blocking & shielding are excellent defences but become ineffective & dangerous once a blade is introduce on the same lines of attack.

As Panantukan is based on the principle that an attacker has a knife in his hand while attacking on those same lines its defences usually involve more parrying & redirecting a strike rather than blocking & covering up like in standard boxing. Guro Krishna introduced us to main possible combinations to help familiarise us with common lines of attack & how to deal with safely if the attacker has a visible or hidden blade.

  • Knife Finally we ran through the knife gunting sequence against the common angles of attack & their direct empty hand versus knife translation, incorporating percussive disarms.

At the conclusion of the seminar two students, Lionel & Fai, successfully graded for their Module 7 grade. The entire club would like to thank Guro Krisnha & all particapants for making the workshop such a success.

(View Workshop Photos)

The first of this year's Warriors Eskrima training seminars was held on Saturday 10th of March.

The workshop was broken down into 3 sections:

  • Panantukan (Filipino boxing) Guro Krishna focused on the relationship between empty hand and knife techniques and also the use of different lines and tools such as the hammer fist & the elbow.

  • Solo Baston (Single Stick) Guro had us work on recovery sequences from power shots, then introduce the concepts into hand & leg sparring.

  • Baraw (Knife Defence) was the final section, here Guro had the knife man use different lines of attack to force the defender to develop faster reactions.

At the conclusion of the seminar two students, Lionel & Fai, successfully graded for their Module 6 grade.

On behalf of the Warriors Eskrima club I would like to thank Guro Krishna for yet another excellent day’s training and a special thanks to all the lads who travelled from far & wide to support the seminar.
